RESPONSIBLE CARE

About Responsible Care

Responsible Care (RC) is a global chemical industry initiative designed to drive continuous improvement in the safe management of chemicals and achieve excellence in Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security (EHS&S) performance. Launched in 1985 by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), RC has been adopted by chemical associations in over 70 economies under the umbrella of International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA). The Indian Chemical Council (ICC), the apex body representing India's chemical industry, has been implementing the RC Program since 1993, with significant adoption since 2003 and active industry engagement from 2006. As of April 2025, 99 companies are RC signatories in India, with 91 holding the prestigious RC Logo, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and EHS&S excellence.

RC is a voluntary, ethical initiative that requires a top-down commitment, starting with the CEO/MD of member companies, to implement seven code-based management systems as a cultural practice at the operator level. Successful implementation leads to reduced operating costs, improved stakeholder relationships, ensured legal compliance, enhanced risk management, and increased customer satisfaction and safety. The RC Logo tagline, "Driving Safety and Sustainability" underscores its focus on community engagement, supply chain transparency, and continuous performance improvement.
